In addition to our traditional 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention prizes, starting this year, the Worcester Regional Science & Engineering Fair will be offering a series of Special Awards that highlight specific themes such as environmental stewardship, health and wellness, psychology and human behavior, plant science, aerospace and engineering, ethical use of AI/ML, science communication, and solutions to local community challenges.
Each Special Award is sponsored by a community partner - a business, nonprofit, professional society, or educational institution who specializes in these fields. These awards and their sponsors are listed below!
Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park
Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park Environmental Sustainability Award
Recognizes a student project that focuses on how people and the environment intersect and makes significant contributions in the fields of climate change, ecology, pollution, energy efficiency, biodiversity, water, land use, pollution, restoration, or sustainability.
EARTH ltd / Southwick's Zoo
EARTH Conservation and Stewardship Award
Recognizes a student project that identifies a real-world environmental problem – such as plastic waste, local water quality, or habitat loss – and proposes a simple, actionable solution. The student must demonstrate a clear understanding of how their work helps protect local ecosystems and communicate their findings in a way that encourages others to care for the planet.
Ecotarium
EcoTarium Museum-Ready Science Award
This award recognizes a student project that communicates scientific ideas with exceptional clarity, creativity, and hands-on engagement. The winning project demonstrates strong potential to be adapted into a family-friendly museum exhibit by exemplifying the work that makes science approachable, understandable, and engaging for a broad audience (including children, families, and adults) and reflects the principles of informal learning used in museum settings.
The Hiatt School of Psychology at Clark University
The Hiatt School of Psychology at Clark University Award for Outstanding Project on Psychology and Human Behavior
Recognizes an outstanding science fair project in the psychological and behavioral sciences. This award celebrates student research that demonstrates rigorous methodology, creative thinking, and meaningful contributions to understanding human behavior, cognition, social processes, or psychological phenomena.
Mass Audubon
The Mass Audubon Environmental Research Award
Recognizes a student project that uses environmental, ecological, or natural science to investigate questions about ecosystems, wildlife, agriculture, climate resilience, or the sustainable use and protection of land and natural resources. Judges will look for a clear, nature-focused research question, sound research methods, a meaningful connection to real-world environmental or community needs, and a thoughtful, knowledgeable, and clearly communicated presentation.
MBI (Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives)
MBI Future Innovator Award
Recognizes a project that embodies the qualities and characteristics of a successful innovator, such as curiosity, perseverance, thoughtful experimental design, and clear evidence of growth as a researcher. This project should show genuine scientific curiosity and a clear motivation for asking the research question, persistence in the face of challenges, thoughtful reflection on what was learned, and clear communication of methods, results, and conclusions.

Woo! Science Community Impact Award
Recognizes a student project that clearly communicates a scientific idea to the public and applies it to a real-world problem in the community through accessible and engaging visuals, writing, and conversation, and the proposal of a realistic, well-thought-out solution or set of actions that could make a tangible difference in community member's lives.
Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce
Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce Emerging Community Leadership in Business & Innovation Award
Recognizes high school students who want to solve real problems in their community. Students will use business thinking, along with science, engineering, or technology, to create smart and realistic business ideas. Students do not need to be an expert - what matters most is that they can clearly explain the problem, show how the idea works, and explain why it could help people in the community.
